The Cowan First Church of the Nazarene was organized in 1919 under the leadership of Rev. S.W. Strickland. There were 11 charter members. Prior to the building being constructed the services were held in the members’ homes and then on Sunday afternoons at a Baptist Church. The first church was dedicated in 1919 by Rev. J.J. Rye. It was a white framed church with the parsonage attached to the back.

In 1951 the white-framed church was bricked and remodeled inside under the leadership of Rev. C.M. Bowes.
-
In November of 1954 the church burned and all that remained were the brick walls that were built only three years before. “The church body was devastated but not defeated” said Helen Curtis. The new church in the current location was completed on Easter Sunday in 1955 under the leadership of Rev. R.C. Stinnett.

A new parsonage was purchased on Elliot Drive and is the current location of the parsonage. The former parsonage was later connected to the church as an annex which is used for fellowship gatherings and classrooms. Many upgrades have been made to the church after the joining of the parsonage to the church sanctuary. Many of these renovations were accomplished under the leadership of Rev. Norman Cox.

Today we look forward in anticipation in how God’s hand will be continuing to guide the church to bless it and the surrounding community.
